Make The Most Out Of Story Time In Valparaiso

Valparaiso parents know that reading with children is essential to their academic success and development, but not all storybook sessions are as productive as others in building literacy skills. Instead of zooming through one picture book after another, take time to pause and allow your child to process the story.

Ask questions like, ‘What do you think will happen next?’ or ‘How did that make [the main character] feel?’ Enjoy the artwork and see what your child can infer from the pictures.

Beginning readers can point to each word as you read together. This will help them recognize that letters make up words and words make up sentences and they will get used to punctuation conventions.

Chesterton Home Offices: Small Is Beautiful Years ago, I remember hearing about an entrepreneur who ran a multi-million dollar construction company from her studio apartment, using a small closet as an office. Of course this was only the administrative headquarters, the heavy equipment was kept elsewhere.

I was impressed by this thrifty home business owner who said she had no plans to rent space and increase her operating costs as her company grew: she loved her little closet office and made it work.

Today’s article is about working in a small home office.

Think of yourself as an astronaut in a cockpit with all the controls at your fingertips. How is a cockpit organized? There are buttons and switches on every level, but all accessible.

  • Get a desk that fits your space. Corner desks can free up space not ordinarily used.
  • Office chairs with rollers let you easily access items within arm’s reach without having to stand up.
  • Shelves, shelves, shelves! Use all that prime vertical real estate on your walls.
  • Get a paper shredder and use it.

A paper shredder takes up some room but frees up space previously populated by papers you don’t need anymore. For example, invoices or sales orders that have been entered electronically. Health Benefits of Valparaiso Dirt!

Most Valparaiso parents know about the health benefits of gardening as a family: spending time outdoors, working together, establishing a connection to the food we eat, better nutrition, and many more.

Something not so well known in Valparaiso is that the dirt itself contains beneficial bacteria that can aid in depression, cognitive functioning, and even in fighting some cancers.

Working with soil in Valparaiso – digging, pulling weeds, harvesting vegetables – exposes Illinois kids and parents to a strain of bacteria called mycobacterium vaccae. Recent research reveals that m. vaccae triggers the release of seratonin, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

In one study, two groups of mice were fed peanut butter sandwiches before finding their way through a difficult maze. One of the groups had m. vaccae spread on the sandwiches. The mice that ingested the bacteria ran the maze twice as fast and exhibited half as many stress behaviors as the mice that didn’t have the bacteria.

Think of Valparaiso kids in the ‘good ole’ days,’ running around on unpaved roads, playing in meadows, forests, and dirt piles, and half of the time probably bare-foot. It is quite a different childhood than the sanitized version that exists in our society today. Children not only need more time out-of-doors, but they need to get dirty! Let your Valparaiso neighbors hear you yell: ‘Kids, go outside and get dirty!’

Valparaiso Injuries Get The Ice Fast!

If your Valparaiso kids are active on the field, the court, or in your own backyard, chances are you have dealt with many bumps, bruises, and sprains. Prompt medical care can make all the difference when it comes to how quickly an injury heals.

Despite medical advancements, when it comes to a sprain, strain, break, or bruise, the best way to reduce pain and swelling is the same as when you were a kid: apply ice.

For the best DIY ice bag, fill a zip-top bag with ice cubes or crushed ice and a little water. The liquid will help the bag conform to the body and distribute the cold evenly. You can also use the frozen peas trick, which does essentially the same thing.

Don’t apply the bag to bare skin, however. This could cause frostbite or even a burn. Wrap the pack in a thin towel or article of clothing.

Don’t take the ice off too soon. Removing it after just a few minutes, when the skin is cold to the touch, won’t have a lasting effect. Leave ice on the injury until the area goes numb, but not more than 20 minutes. Repeat this once an hour for up to four hours.

Remember to get the ice on as soon as possible. Preventing and reducing inflammation speeds up the healing process. The sooner you get ice on it, the sooner your Valparaiso child will be back in action.

Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Valparaiso Kids

Healthy, growing children need to snack between meals for proper nutrition. Most Valparaiso parents have probably had the experience of forgetting an afternoon snack. What happens? Kids finally notice they’re hungry about an hour before dinner, and boy is it hard to wait!

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Valparaiso children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Here are some great healthy snack ideas using peanut butter for Chesterton and Wheeler kids.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

There are two schools of thought about negative reviews: To respond or not to respond.

In an article in the Direct Selling News, author Don Sorenson very effectively explains why responding to negative reviews may increase the harm to your online reputation. I believe the points that Mr. Sorenson makes regarding negative reviews are important for every Valparaiso online seller.

‘When you see a negative review about your company the instinctive reaction is to post a response to set the record straight. I understand the human need to respond, but you have to consider Google’s point of view. ‘Now when someone does a search on your company, they are even more likely to see the negative review. You want to avoid that. Family Meal Time in Valparaiso

Valparaiso parents want to make sure that their kids spend time doing things that will help them be healthy and successful. Because of this, juggling the family schedule and prioritizing activities are a major part of parenting in the Wheeler, Chesterton, and Hobart areas.
